A different story

Why Helsinki, why now

At a time when Jewish communities across the Western world face growing instability, uncertainty, and a distressing rise in antisemitism, Shoresh Jewish Learning Center Helsinki offers a different story — one rooted in strength, tranquility, and continuity.

Finland — known for its breathtaking nature, safety, open society, and ranked the happiest country in the world for many years running — is home to a Jewish community small in size but rich in spirit. Helsinki is not only a hub of innovation and beauty, but a place where Jewish life can thrive: peacefully, proudly, and securely.

Our mission

Five families, one renewed future

Shoresh JLC Helsinki is a multi-year initiative to build a warm, vibrant institute of Jewish learning in the heart of Northern Europe. Our goal is to bring together five Torah-observant, English-speaking families who will serve as pillars of Torah learning, Jewish education, and spiritual inspiration for the broader Helsinki community.

This initiative will become a center for Jewish study, meaningful prayer services, educational programming, and outreach — both formal and informal — rooted in love, respect, and authenticity.

A response to today's landscape

A uniquely stable, welcoming home

Shoresh Helsinki is more than a place of Jewish learning. It is a response to today's shifting Jewish landscape. As many communities in North America and Western Europe face increasing challenges — from antisemitism and political polarization to economic uncertainty — Finland stands out as a uniquely stable and welcoming environment. Here, Jewish families benefit from:

Universal healthcare

With low out-of-pocket costs for families.

Free, high-quality education

For all children, from early years through university.

Family-oriented support

Generous parental leave, family allowances, and social safety nets.

Safe, clean cities

One of the world's safest countries, year after year.

Low antisemitism

Compared to many Western societies, Jewish life here is respected and protected.

Tight-knit community

Modest in number, open-hearted, and eager to grow alongside Shoresh.

Looking ahead

A model for Jewish life beyond Helsinki

We believe Helsinki is one of the best-kept secrets of global Jewish life. With its forward-thinking values and exceptional quality of life, it offers something rare: the opportunity to raise a Jewish family and engage in serious Jewish learning in peace, without sacrificing spiritual growth.

We also aim for the Shoresh JLC model to serve as a platform for the revitalization of smaller Jewish communities in safe spaces across Europe — enhancing the accessibility of Jewish learning, study, and education wherever it is needed.
